How do I get rid of fleas in my Dad's House?

My elderly Dad lives by himself and cherishes the pets he has but they have created a bad situation. He had adopted my brothers kids one of who left a cat in a room plus mountains of clothes. Then on top of that there was flooding so he brought in outside cats to keep them safe and they were in the room for about a month. Now there is an unbelievable amount of fleas. He is on a fixed income. I am trying my best to kill them but it is hard to be in the room. Two minutes and you are covered in fleas. I have bombed, spread sevin garden dust and bombed again but with the mess of clothes I am sure they hide. But in order to be able to throw away the clothes the fleas need to be killed out some. please any ideas???? I know this sounds awful, but it is serious.
